PROvartaci – now open at Museum Ovartaci

The exhibition about being a human can be seen until 31. January 2026.

Wow – what an opening day! Thanks to all of you who stopped by and made the opening of PROvartaci – being a human an attraction with a great atmosphere and happy faces.

The exhibition is a brave journey into subjects we rarely talk about:

  • Existential longing
  • Identity in transition
  • Mental vulnerability
  • Anxiety and insecurity
  • Loneliness

In a present time with so much focus on performance and keeping up a façade, PROvartaci – being a human insists that this is all part of being a human. Art opens us up. Art asks questions. Art invites you to feel and perhaps find something you thought was hidden.

👉 PROvartaci – being a human can be seen at Museum Ovartaci until 31. January 2026. We look forward to welcoming you – and we promise, the exhibition will move you.

Art, courage and fantasy – two powerful artist talks

Jonna Pedersen and Jacob Hoff invite you into their artistic universes in a unique encounter between art and its creator when sharing the stories behind their works. In her artwork “Det røde rum – konfrontér din angst” (The red room – confront your fear) Jonna Pedersen talks about the installation that explores erythrophobia – the fear of the colour red – and the potential of art as a safe room for courage, vulnerability and self-healing. Jacob Hoff presents his portrait triptych of Ovartaci’s fictional sisters and shares thoughts on creative power, imagination and the border between reality and unreality.

Artist talk with Jonna Pedersen is on the 9 October at 17-18 and with Jacob Hoff on the 6 November at 17-18. Participation in the talks is free with an entrance ticket to the museum.

FRIRUMMET – when art creates room for life

Behind each work in the traveling exhibition Frirummet – The Creative Workshops is a personal story. Paintings, drawings, ceramic, sculptures and photographs all created by vulnerable artists finding strength, expression and a community through creative work.

The exhibition is more than just art on the walls – it is connected to Ovartaci and the tradition of using art as a sanctuary. It reminds us how important making room for creativity is also when life is difficult.

During the autumn the exhibition can be experienced at Risskov Sognegård so do look by and be inspired by the art and the artist behind the works.

Ovartaci's story never gets old, boring or irrelevant

Once again Ovartaci's story is the subject of a documentary project. On Wednesday 17 September, Sophia and Albert, two students from the European Film College in Ebeltoft (which also happens to be Ovartacis hometown) visited Museum Ovartaci. The students spent the afternoon filming in the exhibition rooms and interviewing Georg Schwarz from the museum for the documentary about Ovartaci's life, art and his influence on society today.

Sophia from New Jersey, USA, said that she recognizes Ovartaci's story of gender identity in several of her friends back home in the USA, who, like Ovartaci, also have gone through a transition. The artist's struggle to be exactly who they wanted to be is an inspiration to many and a story of identity that can be reflected in the present.

Albert from Hellerup, Denmark is interested in Ovartaci’s enormous, admirable creativity, which perhaps is connected to the price of being mentally ill. To him an exciting crossover telling the story of beauty and suffering.

The documentary will be shown at the European Film College in connection with a study programme.
