The weather showed its more unpredictable side when the Vestereng Sculpture Trail officially opened during Aarhus Festival. Fortunately, that did not stop the many visitors from joining us – and between the showers, the sun came out to shine alongside the young artists.

It was a festive afternoon with art, nature and community at its heart. The Sculpture Trail has been created through collaborations between young people, professional artists and local partners. The result is a new outdoor space where art and nature come together at Vestereng.

A big thank you to all the young artists, contributors and visitors – and especially to everyone who braved the unpredictable festival weather and helped give the Sculpture Trail such a fantastic start.

The Sculpture Trail is now open – so head out to Vestereng and experience it for yourself.

On Thursday 17 September, Museum Ovartaci invites you to an open creative writing workshop inspired by Ovartaci’s art and stories.

Throughout his life, Ovartaci worked across a wide range of artistic forms, and writing was also part of his creative practice.

During the workshop, we will explore Ovartaci’s universe through a series of short writing exercises inspired by his artworks, figures, materials and texts. The aim is to use writing as another way into the art – and perhaps gain new perspectives on your own creative practice along the way.

The workshop is open to anyone with an interest in the written word. No previous writing experience is required, whether you write poetry, prose, diaries or notes – or simply want to try your hand at creative writing.

Combine a cosy brunch with an introduction to the art and life of Ovartaci – Saturday 19 September, 11 am–2 pm.

We begin the day with brunch in the square outside the museum, with freshly baked bread, cold cuts, juice and coffee or tea. At noon, one of our museum guides will take you into Ovartaci’s extraordinary universe. Through selected works and stories, you will gain insight into his artistic development and his life as a patient at the Psychiatric Hospital in Risskov.

After the guided tour, you are welcome to explore the museum at your own pace.

There are only 20 places available, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

On 30 September, we open the doors to Frirummet’s Art Exhibition at Museum Ovartaci – and everyone is invited to join us for the opening.

The exhibition brings together a diverse selection of works presented in a lively salon-style display. During the opening, you can explore the artworks, meet the artists in the working studio and discover ceramics and smaller works, which will also be available for purchase.

We will celebrate the opening with cake tapas, coffee, tea and other refreshments – and we look forward to an afternoon filled with art, encounters and a great exhibition-opening atmosphere.

If you cannot join us for the opening, Frirummet’s Art Exhibition can be experienced at Museum Ovartaci from 1–7 October, 10 am–5 pm.

NetVÆRK is a collaborative art project in which we are creating a 15-metre-long artistic fence for the entrance to the Vestereng Sculpture Trail.

Inspired by textile artist Henriette Norup’s nature-inspired motifs, we weave colourful images into wire mesh – and everyone is welcome to join in. No experience is needed, and we provide both materials and guidance to get you started.

Drop by on your own or bring a friend and leave your mark on an artwork that continues to grow from workshop to workshop.

Have you not yet experienced ’The Line that Holds the World’? There is still time to explore the fascinating works of Chilean artist Óscar Morales.

The exhibition takes you into an artistic universe filled with colours, patterns, numbers, machines and imaginative systems that unfold across the paper and create a world entirely of their own.

And you are not only invited to explore Óscar’s world – you can become part of it yourself. Pick up a marker, take a seat and make a drawing for Óscar. Draw something that matters to you. Something you want to hold on to – or something you do not want to disappear.

Your drawing will be kept together with contributions from other visitors and, after the exhibition, sent to Óscar in Chile – as a greeting from Aarhus to the artist.

Would you like to meet people, provide great service and become part of the community at Museum Ovartaci?

We are looking for volunteer hosts who would like to welcome our visitors and help create a warm and inviting museum experience. As a host, you will assist with ticket sales and the museum shop, as well as tell visitors about the museum and our current exhibitions.

No previous experience is required – we will make sure you receive a good introduction. What matters most is that you are curious, service-minded and enjoy meeting many different people.

We are looking for volunteers who can take a regular weekday shift once a week, as well as substitute and weekend hosts who can help 1–2 times a month. You will always be on duty together with another volunteer.

Can you bring art and history to life – and create meaningful encounters with people?

We are looking for new volunteer guides who would like to introduce our visitors to Museum Ovartaci’s unique universe.

As a guide, you will introduce visitors to the museum’s collection of Art Brut, with Ovartaci as a central figure, while bringing together art, cultural history and stories from the Psychiatric Hospital in Risskov. It is an approach to museum interpretation that encompasses both artistic perspectives and people’s lived experiences – inviting curiosity, reflection and dialogue.

You do not need any previous knowledge of Art Brut or experience as a guide. We provide thorough training. What matters most is that you are curious, enjoy communicating and feel comfortable meeting a wide range of people.

As a volunteer, you will also become part of the museum’s professional and social community and have the opportunity to develop your experience in museum interpretation and visitor engagement.
