Hans Heinerik Nielsen was admitted to this hospital, for two periods. In 1945 he was injured whilst carrying out a sabotage operation for the Danish resistance. He suffered a severe injury to his head, and he woke up with memory loss and convinced that he was a painter, and the son of King Christian X. From then on he called himself Prince Heinerik.
Most of Hans Heinerik Nielsen.’s paintings are executed in a naive colourist style. He wanted to convey to spectators the joy and happiness of life.
Hans Heinerik Nielsen. is considered to be one of the most talented naïve artists in Denmark. He exhibited at several curated exhibitions, and some of his paintings were sold to Århus Amts Kommune.
Royal themes were always his main topic. Considering himself a member of the royal family, he conducted a correspondence, sending cards, letters and sometimes a painting for royal birthdays and other special occasions. This went on upto the point where he also wanted to be paid from the civic list. The Head of the Royal Household asked him to stop his correspondence, which he reluctantly did. Still to his great joy, friends and people close to him continued to call him Prince Heinerik.
Also represented in this room are paintings inspired by some of the world’s great artists, as well as paintings with topics taken from Hans Heineriks trips around Århus on his colourful painted Vespa.
