A number of conversations with Louis Marcussen, called Ovartaci, who died in 1985, at the age of 91, after 56 years’ stay in the Psychiatric Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark, The conversations are concerned with the artist’s thoughts, feelings and visions relating to a random selection of the characteristic and most talented art, he created during his stay in the hospital.
The book is amply illustrated with 102 colour reproductions of Ovartaci-pictures. The background for the book was a wish for making Ovartaci’s world of images, thoughts, feelings and experiences as a psychiatric patient in a large psychiatric hospital through 56 years accessible to a wider public. However the book also contains a wish to create better communication between the mentally ill and the mentally healthy, and to illustrate the value of creative activities as a help to self-help for patients suffering from mental illnesses.
Curator William Gelius, Ribe Museum of Art, Denmark wrote the following: “Ovartaci’s pictures are like visions of dreams; they do not halt at the mere subconscious content. It is, as if the background in his best pictures is knocked down, allowing the wiever access to collective subconsciousness – the human nature in general. It seems that Ovartaci has the ability to navigate with the greatest of ease – as an artist – the much sought and fought for by the surrealistic movement”.
